February 2, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports a mother and her four children were attacked by five dogs, leaving one child in critical condition.
The dog attack took place in the vicinity of Arrow Boulevard and Citrus Avenue at approximately 5:00 p.m. Monday. The woman and children were walking on a path when they were attacked by a pack of dogs, including a bull mastiff, a pit bull terrier and three other large dogs.
According to Sgt. Jeff Decker of the Fontana Police Department the dogs had escaped from a backyard after digging a hole under the fence.
The youngest child was a five year old girl who is listed in critical condition, suffering dog bites, broken ribs, a punctured lung and possible internal injuries; she was also placed on a ventilator to help her breath. Sgt. Decker stated the child was ripped from her mother’s hands by one of the dogs and shook violently by one of the dogs, leaving the mother believing she had been killed.
Another of the children a 6 or 7 year old boy was transported to the hospital with serious bite wounds on his leg, and another sister of the girl critically injured was also sustained injuries to her arms and legs. The eldest of the children an eight year old boy was not injured during the dog attack.
According to Sgt. Decker teenagers that saw the mother and her children being attacked tried to chase the pack of dogs away by throwing rocks at them. The police chased the dogs down after being alerted about the attack and the pit bull terrier was shot, the pack of dogs was impounded at the San Bernardino County Animal Shelter.
Sgt. Decker stated the owners of the dogs stated they have never been trained for sport or any activity and were concerned that the attack occurred.

I've had quite a few calls from people in LA regarding dog bites. I am in Arizona, however. I handle mostly dog bite law and injuries. Have you seen a lot of spikes in the number of pit bull claims?
